People occasionally ask us, “What does La Raza mean?”

We’re glad they ask.

​

Our name has carried special meaning since our organization began in Oakland, Californina in 1971, and understanding that meaning is an important part of understanding who we are.

​

The Spanish word raza literally translates as “race,” but in everyday Spanish its meaning is much broader. Throughout Latin America, expressions such as “mi raza” have long been used to mean “my people,” “our community,” or “our shared heritage.” It is a phrase that speaks of connection, belonging, mutual support, and pride in one’s roots.

​

The modern understanding of La Raza was also shaped by Mexican philosopher and educator José Vasconcelos. In his 1925 book La Raza Cósmica (The Cosmic Race), he envisioned a society enriched through the blending of cultures and peoples. His philosophy celebrated the idea that our diversity is a source of strength and that different cultures can come together to build a richer and more vibrant society.

When the founders of our organization chose the name La Raza Athletic Association, they were expressing those same values in the community they knew best. They wanted to create more than basketball leagues. They wanted to create a place where young people could come together and feel that they belonged.

For us, La Raza has never been about drawing lines but about bringing people together. It reminds us that strong communities are built when people honor their heritage, respect one another, and work together for the good of future generations.

Over the years, our organization has grown beyond athletics alone. Today, in addition to sports, we support young people through scholarships, mentorship, leadership development, and community service. While our programs have evolved, the values that inspired our founders remain the same.

​

Today, our athletes, scholarship recipients, volunteers, coaches, board members, donors, and supporters represent many different backgrounds, cultures, and life experiences. What brings us together is not where we come from, but a shared belief that every young person deserves encouragement, opportunity, and a place to belong.

To us, La Raza is more than a name.

It is a reminder that communities are strongest when people know who they are, honor where they came from, and open their hearts to others.

We will continue building La Raza Athletic Association on the vision first imagined in 1971.  We remain proud of our history, grateful for the diverse community that surrounds us, and committed to creating opportunities for future generations.
